Jannis Ozella Caddell Caviness was born on December 9, 1948, in Moore County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Walter Caddell and Dorothy Caddell. She had great memories of growing up in her grandparents’ home where her grandparents and aunts were her role models and helped raise her.

Jannis graduated from Pinckney High School in Carthage, NC and later attended Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, NC. She married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Dallas “D.A.” Caviness on July 2, 1967. They were married 52 years and what a true love story it was. They were blessed with two sons, Chad Tyron, and Keith Alson. They took great pride in their sons.

Jannis was employed as a secretary for North Moore High School where she kept a watchful eye over her two boys. She was later asked to take a position for Moore County School system in the media center. She loved her job. Throughout the years, she would often talk about the love she had for her students.

She was a very kind and spiritual woman. She was a faithful member of Bellview AME Zion Church in Robbins, NC. She served as church secretary, Deaconess, was on the Steward Board, a Senior choir member, and served on the Ministry of Kindness. She was a NAACP life member and membership chairman. She led her life serving God.

Jannis was a proud “Grand mommy” to her two precious grandchildren, Jurnee Elisha and Brayden Alson. They were her pride and joy. After the passing of her beloved, husband, “D.A.” in 2019, she came to Charlotte to be closer to her sons and help take care of her “grand babies.” Her family was her world.

Jannis transitioned peacefully in her home in Robbins, NC on December 3, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Caddell and Dorothy Caddell and three sisters: Shirley White, Debbie Cooper, and Trina Hickman.

She leaves to cherish her legacy two sons, Chad (Daphanie) of Charlotte, NC, Keith (Nicole) of Charlotte, NC; one granddaughter, Jurnee; one grandson, Brayden; a sister Brenda (Tom) Washington of Detroit Michigan; one brother, Tony Lathers; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and relatives and friends.
